CAPSULE Presentation
Each hard gelatin capsule contains:
Racecadotril BP 100 mg
Racecadotril is the oral enkephalinase inhibitor. It is used in the treatment of the acute diarrhea. It reduces the secretion of the water and electrolytes into the intestine.
Indications
-
Acute diarrhea
- Gastroenteritis
- Diarrhea
Mechanism of action
Racecadotril increases the availability of the endogenous enkephalins by inhibiting the enkephalinase which is bound to membrane thus endogenous enkephalinase activates the gamma opiod receptors present in the GI Tract. These leads to the reduction in the level of the cAMP, therefore decreases secretion of the water and electrolytes in the intestinal lumen.
Pharmacokinetics
Absorption:
It is rapidly absorbed orally.
Protein Binding:
It is about 90% bound to serum proteins.
Metabolism:
It undergoes hydrolysis to thiorphan which is the active metabolite of the racecadotril.
Excretion:
It is excreted via urine as well as through feces.
